Phaseolus acutifolius

Phaseolus acutifolius

Family: Fabaceae

Cultivation

Phaseolus acutifolius is a plant mainly of the drier subtropics, though it can also be cultivated in warmer regions of the temperate zone so long as there is a sufficiently long growing season to ripen the crops in autumn. It can also be grown in tropical areas at elevations up to 1,900 metres so long as the climate is not excessively wet. It prefers a mean annual temperature within the range 20 - 30°c, but can tolerate 8 - 38°c It cannot be grown in areas where night temperatures fall below 8°c.

Family: Fabaceae

Cultivation

The runner bean is a plant of higher elevations in the tropics, where it can be grown at elevations from 1,400 - 2,800 metres. It can also be grown at lower elevations in the subtropics and as an annual crop in the temperate zone. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 12 - 26°c, but can tolerate 5 - 30°c.

Phaseolus lunatus

Phaseolus lunatus

Family: Fabaceae

Cultivation

Phaseolus lunatus is found in the tropical and subtropical regions of South and Central America, and generally grows best in lowland tropical areas at elevations up to 1,500 metres. It can also be grown in warmer regions of the temperate zone, so long as there is a sufficiently long enough growing season to ripen the crop. An annual rainfall in the range 900 - 1,500 is adequate, but once established the crop tolerates as little as 500 - 600 mm of rainfall.

Phaseolus polystachios

Phaseolus polystachios

Family: Fabaceae

Cultivation

Found in the wild on a range of soils from clays to sands. This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria, these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby.

Phaseolus vulgaris

Family: Fabaceae

Cultivation

Phaseolus vulgaris is native to the tropics of the Americas, where it is usually found at elevations above 600 metres, though good crops can be obtained down to sea level. It can also be grown as a summer crop in regions of the temperate zone with a growing season of three months or more. A temperature in the range 19 - 27°c is preferred - above 30°c many flowers will abort and above 35°c seed is rarely produced.
