Elaeagnus angustifolia
Elaeagnus angustifolia
Family: Elaeagnaceae
Cultivation
Elaeagnus angustifolia is a very hardy plant, tolerating temperatures down to about -40°c. However, plants prefer a continental climate where cold winters are followed by hot, often dry summers. In mild winter areas plants can come into growth too soon in the spring and the young growth can then be damaged by late frosts, whilst the cool moist summers of maritime regions are often not hot enough to fully ripen the new growth, which is can then susceptible to damage during the winter.

Elaeagnus commutata
Elaeagnus commutata
Family: Elaeagnaceae
Cultivation
Elaeagnus commutata is a very hardy plant, tolerating temperatures down to about -40°c when dormant. Plants grow best in a continental climate, with its cold winters and warm to hot summers. In regions with milder winters and cooler summers the plants are likely to suffer winter damage, mainly because the wood is not fully ripened in the cooler summers and also because mild winters can encourage the plant to come into new growth too soon - this new growth being susceptible to frost damage.
