Growth—

A plant of the tropics and subtropics, it is found from around sea level to elevations of over 1,200 metres in the tropics[1]. Requires a sunny position. Acid light soils favour its not very deep rooting system[2]. The seed has a large cavity between the cotyledons which enables it to float, and the distribution pattern of the species indicates that seeds are sometimes dispersed by sea water[2]. This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria, these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby[3].
