Safety & Hazards

The whole plant is poisonous[1]. When not in flower, this species is very similar in appearance to Melientha suavis, a species with edible shoots. The young shoots of this species have sometimes been eaten instead of those of Melientha suavis, with fatal results. For instance, in February 2005 in West Cambodia, more than 60 people suffered poisoning after having eaten the leaves of this species, and 15 of them (mainly children) died[1].
