A plant of dry to moist tropical areas, where it is usually found at elevations up to 600 metres but sometimes to 2,000 metres[1]. It grows best in areas where annual daytime annual temperatures are within the range 14 - 24°c, though it can tolerate 7 - 32°c[1]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall of 500 - 1,300mm, but tolerates 400 - 1,500mm[1]. Requires a sunny position[1]. Prefers deep, sandy soils in the wild, where it is also widespread on loamy soils[1]. Established plants are drought resistant[1]. Prefers a pH in the range 5.5 - 7, but tolerates 4 - 7.5[1]. The tree is slow-growing, though this can be improved with irrigation[2].
