Growth—

A plant of the lowland tropics, where it is found at elevations up to 220 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 24 - 38°c, but can tolerate 12 - 44°c[1]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 900 - 1,600mm, but tolerates 600 - 1,800mm[1]. Prefers a sunny position, tolerating light shade[1]. Prefers a light, well-drained soil, tolerating low fertility[1]. Tolerates salt-laden winds[2, 3]. Prefers a pH in the range 5 - 6, tolerating 4.5 - 6.5[1]. Established plants are fairly drought tolerant, though lose most of their leaves[2, 3]. Plants can tolerate fire because they produce a lignotuber under the ground from which they can regrow[3]. Plants can produce fruit during any month but they tend to fruit mainly during the wet season. The quality of the fruit varies between trees[3].
