Cultivation Details
A plant of the tropics, where it is found at elevations up to 1,800 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 16 - 31°c, but can tolerate 12 - 38°c[1]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 640 - 1,750mm, but tolerates 500 - 2,000mm[1]. Succeeds in full sun and in light shade[1]. Prefers a medium to light, well-drained soil[1]. Especially in the lower rainfall areas of its range, the tree is often found on soils with a permanent high groundwater table[2]. Prefers a pH in the range 5.5 - 7, tolerating 5 - 7.5[1]. A very slow-growing tree[2, 1]. Pollarding seems to increase the quantity of fruit the tree produces[2].
