Cultivation Details
Requires a sunny position[1]. Succeeds in sandy and clay soils, so long as they are well-drained, it is also often found growing in poor soils[1]. Established plants are drought tolerant[1]. Freshly planted young trees grow away fairly well[1]. Trees respond well to coppicing[1]. With their thick bark, they are resistant to fires and are also capable of resprouting from the base if the top is too severely burnt[1]. This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria; these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby[].
Propagation
Seed - sow in a nursery seedbed in a sunny position in well-drained soil[1]. The germination rate is usually low, with the seeds sprouting in 10 - 15 days[1].
