Growth—

A plant of low elevations in the moist tropics[1]. Requires a humid position that is sheltered from strong winds[1]. It prefers a well-drained, fully cleared clayey-peaty soil[1]. In heavy clay soils, exposed to wind, this plant does not grow luxuriantly, developing into a shrubby bush very liable to attacks from pests[1].
