Cultivation Details
A plant of the moist tropics, where it is mainly grown at elevations from 1,000 - 2,600 metres, though it also succeeds down to sea level[1]. It can also be cultivated as an annual crop in the temperate zone[1]. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 15 - 28°c, but can tolerate 10 - 35°c[1]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 700 - 1,200mm, but tolerates 500 - 5,000mm[1]. Grows best in a sunny position, tolerating light shade[1]. Tolerant of fairly wet soils, preferring a fertile one of medium texture[1]. Prefers a pH in the range 5 - 6.5, tolerating 4.5 - 7[1]. A first harvest can be obtained 4 - 6 weeks after sowing the seed[2]. The plant has a taproot and does not transplant well[2].
