Botanical Description

Aphanocalyx heitzii is a tree with a hemispherical crown; it can grow up to 45 metres tall. The cylindrical bole can be free of branches for more than half of its height, up to 200cm in diameter with thick plank roots up to 4 metres high and 4.5 metres wide[ 328 Title African Flowering Plants Database Publication Author Website http://www.ville-ge.ch/musinfo/bd/cjb/africa/recherche.php Publisher Conservatoire et Jardin Botaniques. The tree is a commercial source of 'Andoung' timber and is often harvested from the wild for local use and for trade. The species is being felled for its timber, but the threat is not believed to be substantial at present. The long-term survival of the tree and its habitat is uncertain given the extent to which logging concessions have been made. The plant is classified as 'Near Threatened' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
