Botanical Description
Podocarpus trinitensis is an evergreen tree The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood. Podocarpus trinitensis has a very narrow distribution which is restricted to one known historic location on Tobago and 12 localities in North and Central Mountain Ranges in Trinidad. Although there is no current evidence that this species is under direct threat it would still be prudent to list this species as Near Threatened. As it has such a narrow range, it would not take much in a change of circumstances, such as an increase in human-set fires, illegal wood poaching, both of which already occur in the protected areas on Trinidad, to cause a decrease in its area of occupancy. Like all podocarps the wood of Podocarpus trinitensis is of great value! The plant is classified as 'Near Threatened' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
