Botanical Description

Diospyros melanida is a tallish tree. A likely timber of past centuries, populations have been reduced by exploitation and there are now too few trees for commercial use. Regeneration appears to be poor because of the invasion of exotic plants and also exotic animals which destroy the seeds. In many places the populations are reduced to scattered individuals or small subpopulations. The plant is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
