Botanical Description

Gardenia remyi is a shrub or small tree growing 3 - 13 metres tall. The plant is gathered from the wild for local use as a dye plant and adhesive. The plant has become rare in the wild due to the activities of introduced mammals such as pigs, goats and deer, as well as competition from alien plants. About 60 specimens have been recorded over the past 15 years, and it is believed that there might be only a few hundred in total - few immature plants have been reported as of 2011. The total number of known mature individuals is now just 82, with only 16 mature specimens in the largest subpopulation. The population is continuing to decline. The plant is classified as 'Critically Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2020)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
