Botanical Description

Dillenia ferruginea is a tree that can grow up to 20 metres tall[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ]. The tree is one of the best endemic timber trees of the Seychelles. It was harvested almost to extinction in the past for this wood, but is not currently being exploited. Dillenia ferruginea is endemic to the Seychelles, and is found on Mahé, Praslin, Silhouette and Curieuse. It has a very restricted range and the total area of these four islands is just 215 km². The species appears to be recovering from previous over-exploitation and is not thought to be threatened at present. However, its restricted range, the invasion of alien species (affecting the quality of its habitat) and insect pests are all potential threats that could affect it in the future. The plant is classified as 'Near Threatened' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
