Botanical Description

Abies grandis is an immense evergreen tree with a narrow, conical crown; it can grow 65 - 90 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 150cm in diameter[ 11 Title Trees and Shrubs Hardy in Great Britain. Vol 1 - 4 and Supplement. Publication Author Bean. W. Publisher Murray Year 1981 ISBN - Description A classic with a wealth of information on the plants, but poor on pictures. ]. Rapid growth and great size make this species an important timber tree, even though its main use is for pulp. It is commonly harvested from the wild and is also often grown in plantations. The tree has a wide range of traditional uses for food, medicine and as a source of materials. It is also widely grown in gardens, with many cultivars having been developed, and is considered to make an excellent 'Christmas tree'[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ]. Although logged in the past and in the present in many parts of its range, under 'uneven-aged management' this species regenerates well. Aside from 'old growth issues' logging of the plant is not a serious conservation concern at the species level. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
