Gonystylys bancanus has a wide native range but suffered severe population decline, especially over the last half of the 20th century. The species was heavily exploited for its timber, especially between the 1980's and early 2000's, and although there is still some ongoing logging (much of which is illegal) the most pressing threat to the species now is poor natural regeneration and an intrinsic slow rate of growth. It is also at risk from habitat degradation due to the clearance of its native peat and freshwater swamp forest for agriculture and infrastructure. The plant is classified as 'Critically Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2018)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
