Botanical Description

Podocarpus laubenfelsii is an evergreen tree that can grow from 14 - 35 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be 20 - 60cm in diameter[ 329 Title The Gymnosperm Database Publication Author Website http://www.conifers.org/index.htm Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A vast amount of information on conifers and families of gymnosperms. ]. A valuable timber, it is commonly harvested from the wild and traded together with related species as 'podp' wood. Podocarpus laubenfelsii is only known from fewer than 15 herbarium collections made in four locations, among which just one, Mt. Kinabalu, is protected as a National Park. Logging of this valuable timber tree is ongoing but unsustainable due to its slow growth. It may also be affected by deforestation, especially at its lower elevation limits. The plant is classified as 'Endangered' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
