Botanical Description

Cystopteris montana is a deciduous fern with creeping stems; it forms a slowly spreading clump usually around 15 - 40cm tall and 20cm or more wide. The plant is sometimes harvested from the wild for use as an emergency food. The plant is sometimes grown as an ornamental.
