The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food. Sideroxylon occidentale is threatened by deforestation due to land use change for urban expansion and associated human activities. However, the taxon has been recorded many times, there are still areas of well conserved habitat and this species occurs in at least three protected areas. Therefore, despite the change in land use which is occurring across its range, this species is not currently considered to be significantly impacted by habitat loss.
