Botanical Description
Gonystylus maingayi is a tree that can grow around 27 - 40 metres tall. The bole can be around 50 - 80cm in diameter[ 899 Title Tree Flora of Sabah and Sarawak Vols 1 - 6 Publication Author Soepadmo E.; Saw L.G.; Chung R.C.K. (Editors) Publisher Forest Research Institute Malaysia; Kuala Lumpur. Year 2002 ISBN 983-2181-27-5 Description A flora of the woody plants of Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo, often giving details of plant uses. ]. The tree is harvested from the wild for its wood, which is a source of ramin timber. The wood is utilized locally, although larger specimens will be harvested commercially and sold collectively as ramin timber along with wood from other species in the genus. Gonystylus maingayi has a large range, but it is considered to be uncommon across this range . The population is inferred to be in decline due to poor regeneration caused largely by a lack of seed bearing individuals lost to timber harvesting. The harvest and trade of this species is now strictly regulated and the species is listed on CITES Appendix II; although illegal logging is still known to occur. Population decline is also caused by anthropogenic pressure on and change to its native habitat, which is estimated to have declined by at least 41% between 1990 and 2005. The plant is classified as 'Vulnerable' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2018)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
