Botanical Description
Adansonia za is a deciduous tree with a sparse, rounded crown; usually growing up to 30 metres tall but sometimes stunted and no more than 5 metres tall. The bole, which can be up to 6 metres in diameter, is usually cylindrical or slightly tapering, often with irregular swellings[ 727 Title Annals of the Missouri Botanical Garden Vol. 82 Publication Author Website http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org Publisher Missouri Botanical Garden; St. Louis. Year 1995 ISBN 0026-6493 Description A botanical journal containing various articles, including a monograph of the genus Adansonia (Baobabs). It can be downloaded from the Internet. ]. The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food, medicine and source of fibre. It has been suggested as a possible commercial root crop. The abundance and wide range of this species ensures that it is relatively safe. However, several subpopulations are threatened with forest clearance and, given the long generation time of the baobab and the dramatic habitat loss that has occurred in the past, the species may be more vulnerable. The plant is classified as 'Near Threatened' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2011)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
