Botanical Description

Tachigali vulgaris is a tree with a spreading crown; it can grow to about 14 metres tall. The straight, cylindrical bole can be free of branched for up to 5 metres, up to 18cm in diameter[ 453 Title Woods of Northeastern Peru Publication Author Williams L. Website http://www.biodiversitylibrary.org/ Publisher Field Museum Press; Chicago. Year 1936 ISBN Description Gives information on the properties of the wood of well over 1,000 species of woody plants from northeastern Peru. Can be downloaded from the Internet. ]. The tree is harvested from the wild for local use of its wood. The tree is also used in soil restoration and reforestation projects. The main threat to Tachigali vulgaris is habitat loss as a consequence of deforestation by large-scale agro-industry and livestock farming. Both the Brazilian Amazon and the Cerrado have suffered an increase in deforestation rates mainly due to expansion of cattle and soy industries. In the Cerrado, hydroelectric reservoirs and expansion of urban areas are other major causes of deforestation. However, this species' habitat pressure is concentrated in southern and eastern Brazil and it is projected that large areas of the Amazon forest outside Brazil and most of the northwest quadrant of the Brazilian Amazon may not suffer major changes until the mid-century as long as they remain remote and with difficult access. The plant is classified as 'Least Concern' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2017)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
