Camellia grandibracteata was rediscovered in 2012 after not being seen for a decade. However, all known specimens, including the type specimen, are collected from tea gardens and the species is not known to exist in the wild. It is thought that this species may be the result of spontaneous hybridization or introgression in tea gardens, further investigation is needed. The plant is classified as 'Data Deficient' in the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species(2013)[ 338 Title IUCN Red List of Threatened Species Publication Author Website http://www.iucnredlist.org/ Publisher Year 0 ISBN Description A list of plants under threat and facing possible extinction, usually with brief details of the threats and information on habitat. ].
