The plant is harvested from the wild for local use as a food and a medicine. Annona rufinervis is endemic to Colombia where it has been found in less than five localities. There is habitat fragmentation, with over 50% of subpopulations being found in small, isolated habitat patches, and a continuing decline for the species, with over 30% of subpopulations growing in habitats highly disturbed by human activities. There are no subpopulations found within protected areas.
