HabitEvergreen Perennial
Growth—

A plant of the moist tropics, where it is found at elevations up to 1,200 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 24 - 30°c, but can tolerate 15 - 35°c[1]. Dormant plants can be killed by temperatures of 8°c or lower, whilst young growth can be killed at 12°c[1]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 1,200 - 3,000mm, but tolerates 1,000 - 4,000mm[1]. Grows best in full sun or light shade[1]. Succeeds in most fertile soils, so long as they are well-drained[1]. Prefers a position sheltered from strong winds, otherwise its large leaves can get torn to shreds[1]. Prefers a pH in the range 5.5 - 7, tolerating 4.5 - 7.5[1].
