A versatile, tropical plant, able to grow in climates ranging from arid to moist, being found at elevations up to 1,000 metres[1]. It grows best in areas where the mean annual temperature falls within the range 22 - 38°c, but can tolerate 12 - 43°c[1]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 400 - 1,600mm, but tolerates 200 - 1,800mm[1]. Succeeds in a range of humus-rich soils, requiring a sunny position[1]. Found in the wild on sand, sandstone and sometimes clay soils in Western Australia[2]. Plants can tolerate flooding[1]. Prefers a pH in the range 5 - 7.5, but can tolerate 4.5 - 8[1]. The plant has a free-seeding and suckering habit, which makes it a potential weed[1].
