Cultivation Details

HabitDeciduous Tree
Growth—

Succeds in a sunny position in most well-drained soils[1]. Although many species within the family Fabaceae have a symbiotic relationship with soil bacteria, this species is said to be devoid of such a relationship and therefore does not fix atmospheric nitrogen[2]

Propagation

Pre-soak the seed for 24 hours in hot water and then sow it in a cold frame in the autumn[3]. The seed can also be pre-soaked and sown in late winter in a greenhouse[4]. Variable germination. When they are large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in the greenhouse for at least their first winter. Plant them out into their permanent positions in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts. Root cuttings 4cm long in December. Good percentage[4].
