The plant is usually found in areas receiving more than 1,500mm rainfall annually[1]. Tolerant of wet conditions, especially flooding, and short dry periods[1]. The plant is a weed in many annual and perennial crops[1, 2]. It is an opportunistic and agressive colonizer of open or disturbed habitats and can develop into huge thickets in drainage canals and ditches. On the edges of secondary forest, plants grow very large, scrambling among bushes[1, 2].
