Cultivation Details

HabitSemi-deciduous Tree
GrowthFast

Succeeds in a sunny position[1]. The plant grows in humus-rich, fertile soils in the wild[1]. Tolerates seasonal inundation of the soil[1]. A fast-growing plant, it can be more than 2 metres tall within 2 years from seed[1]. This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria, these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby[].

Propagation

Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe[1]. Sow in a lightly shaded position in a nursery seedbed. A moderate rate of germination can be expected, with the seeds sprouting within 10 - 20 days. Transplant the seedlings to individual containers when they have 4 - 6 leaves and they should be ready for planting out 4 - 5 months later[1]. Stunning photographs of each species, brief details on the plant, its uses and how to grow it from seed. A superb work, with the minor irritation that the translation from Portuguese is not of the best.
