Cultivation Details
A plant mainly of lowland tropical areas, though it can extend to elevations of 1,500 metres in Bolivia and Peru[1]. Prefers a sunny position[2]. Prefers a deep, moist, very fertile soil[2]. When planted out, young plants establish well and grow away quickly, easily reaching a height of 3 - 4 metres within 2 years[2].
Propagation
Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a nursery seedbed in light shade[2]. A germination rate of 80% or more can be achieved, with the seeds sprouting in 10 - 20 days[2]. Pot up the seedlings into individual containers when they are 4 - 5cm tall and they are usually ready for planting into their permanent positions within 4 months[2].
