Cultivation Details
Fraxinus mandshurica is a moderately cold-hardy plant, able to tolerate temperatures down to around -20°c when fully dormant. The young growth in spring, however, is very susceptible to damage by frosts and, in areas that are prone to late frosts, the plants are often badly damaged[1]. Grows best in a sunny position, though tolerant of light shade[2]. Although adult trees require a sunny position, seedlings can naturally regenerate under a forest canopy[2]. Plants are tolerant of seasonal inundation of the soil - seedlings exhibit a high tolerance of soil flooding with enhanced stem growth and formation of sprouts, adventitious roots and aerenchyma tissues[2]. Fraxinus mandshurica is a major host of the emerald ash borer, which does not cause damage to this tree species but has become a major pest of the Ash species in N. America, devastating whole populations and killing millions of trees there[2]. Fraxinus mandshurica is not susceptible to ash dieback caused by the fungus Hymenocscyphus fraxieus[2]. A dioecious species, both male and female forms need to be grown if seed is required[2].
