A plant of the moist tropics, where it is found at elevations up to 1,200 metres. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 20 - 30°c, but can tolerate 10 - 38°c[1]. It is able to withstand moderate frosts[2]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 1,500 - 3,500mm, but tolerates 1,100 - 3,800mm[1]. Succeeds in full sun[2]. Grows best in a well-drained, moderately fertile soil of medium texture[1]. Prefers a pH in the range 5 - 6, tolerating 4.5 - 6.5[1]. The tree should not be grown outside its native range because it is showing a tendency to become a vigorous weed[2]. A fast-growing tree[2].
