Cultivation Details
A plant of the subtropics to the tropics, found at elevations from sea level up to 625 metres, but generally above 250 metres in the tropics. Succeeds in full sun to moderate shade[1]. Found wild in fertile, well-drained, chalky, alkaline, clayey soils[1]. Established plants are drought tolerant[1]. Plants have a fairly fast rate of growth when young, growing more than 2 metres tall within 2 years from seed[1].
Propagation
Seed - best sown as soon as it is ripe in a sunny position in a nursery seedbed. A high germination rate can usually be expected, with the seed sprouting within 20 - 30 days[1]. When the seedlings are 5 - 6cm tall, pot them up into individual containers and they should be ready to plant out 5 - 6 months later[1]. Stunning photographs of each species, brief details on the plant, its uses and how to grow it from seed. A superb work, with the minor irritation that the translation from Portuguese is not of the best.
