Growth—

Clematis graveolens is native to the temperate zone of the western and central Himalayas, where it can be found at elevations up to 2,850 metres. A somewhat cold-tolerant plant, when fully dormant it can withstand short periods with temperatures down to about -15°c[1]. Requires a warm, sunny position[1]. Prefers a moist but freely draining, humus-rich loamy soil[1]. Plants flower on the current season's growth. They often do not need pruning, but if they need to be cut back or thinned, then this is best done in late winter or early spring before the plant starts producing new growth[1].
