Growth—

Plants are not adapted to acid soils[1]. They are reasonably shade tolerant[1]. The mature yield of biomass from a hectare can be up to 16 tonnes[1]. This species performed better than C. pubescens in trials in Florida[1]. This species has a symbiotic relationship with certain soil bacteria, these bacteria form nodules on the roots and fix atmospheric nitrogen. Some of this nitrogen is utilized by the growing plant but some can also be used by other plants growing nearby[2].
