Calocedrus formosa is found at low to moderate elevations in the subtropical zone of Taiwan. It prefers a humid climate. It has a cold hardiness limit between -6.6°c and -1.1°c[1]. The tree can tolerate frosts, but needs hot summers in order to do so. It is likely to succeed in warm temperate areas with continental climates and mild winters such as southeastern USA[2]. Young plants are shade tolerant, requiring more light as they grow older. Prefers a humus-rich, moist but well-drained soil.

Propagation

Seed - sow early spring in a greenhouse[3]. When large enough to handle, prick the seedlings out into individual pots and grow them on in light shade in a greenhouse or cold frame for their first winter. Plant them out in late spring or early summer, after the last expected frosts and consider giving them some protection from the cold for their first winter outdoors. Cuttings of the current season's growth, taken in mid autumn, in a light sandy soil in a cold frame[3].
