Calceolaria thyrsiflora is native to central Chile, where it grows at low to medium elevations and experiences occasional low temperatures down to -8°c. It grows in somewhat dry areas, where the mean annual rainfall is around 400 - 800mm, mainly concentrated in the winter, and there is a dry season of 3 - 5 months[1]. It requires abundant moisture in the summer and a dry winter[2]. Plants can be grown outdoors in the mildest areas of the temperate zone[2]. Grows best in a sunny position[1].
