Cultivation Details
Ammophila arenaria is a plant of the temperate and subtropical zones, where it is normally found at elevations near sea level. It grows best in areas where annual daytime temperatures are within the range 9 - 20°c, but can tolerate 2 - 25°c[1]. When dormant, the plant can survive temperatures down to about -5°c, but young growth can be severely damaged at -1°c[1]. It prefers a mean annual rainfall in the range 700 - 900mm, but tolerates 500 - 1,200mm[1]. Requires a sunny position in a light well-drained soil, tolerating moderate salinity[1]. Very tolerant of severe maritime exposure[2]. Established plants are drought tolerant[1]. Prefers a pH in the range 5 - 6, tolerating 4.5 to 6.5[1].
