Safety & Hazards

The sap is very poisonous[1]. The fruit and roots are used to poison hyenas[1].

Cultivation Details

HabitDeciduous Shrub
Growth—

Prefers a position in full sun[1]. Requires a well-drained soil[1, 2]. The plant stores water in its swollen stem and rootstock and is therefore drought tolerant[1]. The plant regenerates quickly after damage by cutting and from bush fires that are not too fierce[1].

Propagation

Seed - Cuttings. Fairly easy, but the resultant plants do not always form the swollen stems found in seed-grown material[1]. Cite as: Tropical Plants Database, Ken Fern. tropical.theferns.info. 2026-02-19. <tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Adenia+volkensii>
