Thinopyrum elongatum

Thinopyrum elongatum

Family: Poaceae

Cultivation

Coming from the Mediterranean region, with its hot dry summers and cool, moist winters, Thinopyrum elongatum is a cool-season grass that grows mainly from the autumn round to the spring and then can become dormant in the summer. It is reported to tolerate an annual precipitation in the range of 300 - 2,100mm and average annual temperatures ranging between 5 - 19°c. Not all forms of the plant are frost-tolerant, but some forms will succeed even in Northern Canada.

When grown at higher elevations (from 1,000 - 2,700 metres) Thinopyrum intermedium can tolerate a minimum annual rainfall of around 300mm, though rainfall requirements are greater at lower elevations. The plant can tolerate up to 1,160mm per annum. Plants can withstand considerable cold, with temperatures down to around -25°c, so long as this is not accompanied by heavy rain.
