Edgeworthia chrysantha
Edgeworthia chrysantha
Family: Thymelaeaceae
Cultivation
Edgeworthia chrysantha is native to the warm temperate zone of souhern China, where it can be found at elevations up to 1,600 metres. Reports vary on cold tolerance, but it seems that the plant can tolerate occasional short-lived periods with temperatures falling to around -5 to -15°c. The spring flowers and young leaves are less hardy, and more susceptible to frost damage, so in areas subject to early spring frosts the plant is best grown in a position sheltered from the early morning sun.

Edgeworthia gardneri
Edgeworthia gardneri
Family: Thymelaeaceae
Cultivation
Edgeworthia gardneri is native to the Himalayas, where it can be found mainly at elevations up to 2,500 metres, though sometimes as high as 3,500 metres. It requires hot summers to fully ripen its wood, but is generally reliably hardy down to about -5°c for short periods and perhaps as low as -15°c if growing in a well-drained soil in a warm, sheltered position. The flowers are damaged by frost so the plant is best grown in a position sheltered from early morning sun.
