Caragana arborescens
Caragana arborescens
Family: Fabaceae
Cultivation
Caragana arborescens is a very cold-tolerant species - dormant plants are hardy to about -30°c. However, it prefers a continental climate with hot summers to ripen its wood, and does not grow so well in areas with mild, especially wet winters - in such a situation the plant can be stimulated into growth too early in the spring, this young growth being susceptible to frost damage. Succeeds in most well-drained soils, preferring a position in full sun and a light sandy dry or well-drained soil.

Caragana brevispina
Caragana brevispina
Family: Fabaceae
Cultivation
Caragana brevispina prefers a continental climate with its hot summers, cold winters and usually a clear movement from one season to another. The dormant plant can tolerate temperatures down to at least -20°c, but in more maritime climates it is often tempted to come into growth early and this new growth can easily be damaged by late spring frosts. Succeeds in most well-drained soils, but prefers full sun and a light sandy dry or well-drained soil.

Cultivation
Caragana decorticans prefers a continental climate with its hot summers, cold winters and usually a clear movement from one season to another. The dormant plant can tolerate temperatures down to at least -15°c, but in more maritime climates it is often tempted to come into growth early and this new growth can easily be damaged by late spring frosts. Prefers full sun and a light sandy dry or well-drained soil.

Caragana gerardiana
Caragana gerardiana
Family: Fabaceae
Cultivation
Caragana gerardiana grows at high elevations in the dry inner valleys of the Himalayas and grows best in continental climates. Whilst very cold-hardy, it does not like growing in moist, cloudy, mild climates. It requires plenty of sun to ripen its wood and, in mild climates, can be excited into growth too early - this new growth being susceptible to damage by late frosts.

Caragana jubata
Caragana jubata
Family: Fabaceae
Cultivation
Caragana jubata is a plant of continental climates with their hot often dry summers and cold winters. It does not grow so well in maritime climates with their moist, cloudy weather and mild winters that can excite a plant into growth too early in the year. In such a climate the best chance of success is to grow the plant at the foot of a warm dry wall in a well-drained light soil.
