Arctostaphylos columbiana

Arctostaphylos columbiana

Family: Ericaceae

Cultivation

Requires a deep moist well-drained light or medium lime-free loam in sun or semi-shade but plants produce less fruit when they are grown in the shade. Prefers a pH in the range 5 - 7, but plants are capable of growing in exceedingly acid conditions - even with a pH as low as 2.8 plants are able to survive, albeit rather dwarfed. Plants resent root disturbance and should be placed in their final positions as soon as possible.

Arctostaphylos nevadensis

Arctostaphylos nevadensis

Family: Ericaceae

Cultivation

Arctostaphylos nevadensis grows in a modified maritime climate - the winters are wet, but high pressure systems in summer result in clear, dry weather. Precipitation may be rain or snow, depending upon elevation. The plant occurs at elevations of 610 - 3,049 metres, and is most common above 1,524 metres - the typical growing season is therefore short; snowpack often does not melt until mid summer.

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

Arctostaphylos uva-ursi

Family: Ericaceae

Cultivation

Requires a deep moist well-drained light or medium lime-free loam in sun or semi-shade. One report says that this species succeeds in alkaline soils (a rather surprising comment considering the general needs of the genus - it is more likely that the plant can grow on limestone so long as the soil remains acid). Fairly shade tolerant but plants produce less fruit when they are grown in the shade.
